About AI Training And Visual Annotation

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Contributors prepare and review examples so models can learn to interpret images, video, language, and other information more accurately.

Visual annotation work uses human judgment to describe design elements such as hierarchy, geometry, typography, framing, movement, and visual flow. It is part of a fast-growing field that offers remote, flexible work for people with specialized creative and technical knowledge.

The Role

OpenTrain AI is recruiting an Editorial, Poster and Marketing Layout Designer to analyze and annotate visual design materials for AI training. You will combine advanced design judgment with precise written documentation and schema-based data creation across print, digital, and motion media.

This is a part-time contractor engagement requiring 20 or more hours per week. The listed pay range is $20 to $50 USD per hour. Strong written English is required, and the role is available in the countries specified in the listing.

  • Employment type: Contractor and part time
  • Time requirement: 20 or more hours per week
  • Pay: $20 to $50 USD per hour
  • Primary language: English
  • Work format: Remote AI training and visual annotation

What You’ll Do

You will work with editorial, poster, and marketing design assets, using established visual and design vocabulary to create consistent annotations. You will also review short video clips when needed and document their visual structure using precise design and cinematography terminology.

The work includes creating exemplar annotations that establish quality benchmarks, identifying unclear cases and schema gaps, and documenting edge cases so annotation guidelines can improve over time. You will maintain alignment with project leads and quality control as annotation frameworks are updated.

  • Annotate editorial, poster, and marketing design assets.
  • Describe typography, hierarchy, geometry, style, framing, movement, and visual flow.
  • Deconstruct completed designs into compositional layers.
  • Populate structured metadata for design and typographic systems.
  • Review short video clips for cinematography, composition, framing, movement, and visual flow.
  • Create exemplar annotations that define quality benchmarks.
  • Identify ambiguous cases, missing categories, and schema edge cases.
  • Use Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and comparable tools to evaluate layered design files.

Requirements

You should have three to five or more years of experience in graphic design, visual or brand design, layout, print, editorial design, or art direction. A portfolio must demonstrate advanced typography, color, layout, and visual hierarchy, particularly in editorial or marketing work.

You will need expert-level proficiency with Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or equivalent design platforms. The role also requires the ability to explain design concepts using precise industry terminology and produce meticulous written annotations and structured documentation in English.

  • Advanced typography, color, layout, and visual hierarchy skills.
  • Professional graphic, editorial, print, brand, motion, or art direction experience.
  • Proficiency with Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or related tools.
  • Ability to deconstruct visual compositions into clearly described elements.
  • Knowledge of design and cinematography terminology.
  • Strong written English for consistent annotations and documentation.
  • A professional portfolio demonstrating relevant work.

Helpful Background

Experience with poster, editorial, or marketing layout design is especially relevant. Motion design, video editing, cinematography, or art direction experience can support short-video composition analysis and the creation of quality benchmarks.

A bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Fine Arts, or a comparable professional portfolio is appropriate. The role is listed as entry level, but the requirements call for substantial professional experience and advanced design capability.

  • Poster design
  • Editorial layout
  • Marketing or brand design
  • Motion design or video editing
  • Cinematography
  • Art direction
  • Graphic design, visual communication, or fine arts education
