We invite you to bring your ideas to ExxonMobil to help create sustainable solutions that improve quality of life and meet society’s evolving needs. Learn more about our What and our Why and how we can work together.

What you will do

ExxonMobil’s UK Summer Placement Scheme is designed to give university students the opportunity to apply their degree knowledge and fulfill their potential, gaining confidence and experience as an individual, and learning new skills in a real operational environment.

Summer Placement students work in pairs or small teams to address real-life plant challenges. You could find yourself designing, coordinating, and analyzing a plant trial or scoping a small capital project.

There will be opportunities to think independently, take initiative, and be innovative. You will receive training, supervision, and coaching support, and have opportunities to interact with our highly skilled manufacturing team and experience world-class Chemical Engineering operations.

Where you will work

Fawley is the UK’s largest integrated petrochemical complex, producing a range of energy products, lubricants, and chemicals that are vital to our everyday lives. Opened by Prime Minister Clement Atlee in September 1951, the complex covers 3,250 acres and provides employment for 2,500 valued staff and contractors. In addition to being a manufacturing hub, Fawley is also home to ExxonMobil UK’s commercial headquarters with product sales, marketing, and business development teams based on site.

What we’re looking for

We're looking for engineers who combine strong technical fundamentals with a practical, delivery-focused mindset. Successful candidates will be curious, resilient, and action-oriented problem solvers who enjoy working in a manufacturing environment and taking ownership of real-world challenges. We value individuals who can adapt quickly, challenge constructively, simplify complex problems, and drive outcomes through collaboration with operations and engineering teams.

Academic ability is important, but it is not the sole differentiator for success. We are looking for engineers who are motivated to take ownership, continuously improve the way work is done, and deliver measurable results through others as well as through their own technical capability.

To be eligible for this role, you must:

  • Be expecting to graduate with a minimum of a 2:1 Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering in 2028
  • Be seeking to gain work experience on an 8-week Summer Placement commencing in July 2027
  • Be able to demonstrate strong personal effectiveness, leadership potential, and the ability to influence outcomes through collaboration

If you are studying a different engineering discipline and feel strongly that the ExxonMobil UK Engineering Industrial Placement Scheme is the right path for you, we would be happy to receive your application. Please provide additional context around your degree discipline in a cover letter.

What are the next steps?

If you are interested, you can apply now. The closing date for this opportunity is Sunday 1st November 2026, at which point we will begin our two-stage assessment process:

  • Behavioural assessment
  • Technical competency-based interview

If your application is not successful at any stage we will let you know as soon as we can.

Conditions of Employment

Successful candidates will be made a conditional offer of employment. The conditions include, but are not limited to: a satisfactory criminal records disclosure; satisfactory employment references over five years (where applicable); verification of qualifications, including any professional accreditation stated in the application; completion of a pre-employment medical, including a test for illicit or unprescribed drugs in accordance with the Company's safety policies; and the legal right to work on the agreed commencement date.
