Job summary

We are seeking an experienced, motivated and compassionate Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly and supportive practice team.

The successful candidate will be primarily based at Bilsthorpe Surgery, providing high-quality clinical and administrative support to patients and the wider practice team. The role will predominantly involve supporting minor operations and clinical procedures, alongside delivering routine Healthcare Assistant duties, including phlebotomy, NHS Health Checks and other patient care responsibilities.

As part of our wider network within the Nottinghamshire Dermatology Service, the post holder will also be expected to travel to other sites across Nottinghamshire when required to support and assist with minor surgery clinics. Flexibility and the ability to work effectively across different locations are therefore essential.

The successful candidate will have previous experience working within a GP practice, primary care or NHS healthcare setting and will demonstrate excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills. They will be confident working independently whilst also working collaboratively with GPs, nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work across both practice sites and provide a range of clinical and administrative support, including:

  • Assisting clinicians with minor surgical procedures and supporting patients before, during and after procedures.

  • Preparing and maintaining treatment rooms, clinical equipment and supplies.

  • Maintaining high standards of infection prevention and control, including cleaning equipment and safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps.

  • Carrying out phlebotomy/blood taking within training and competence.

  • Undertaking NHS Health Checks, clinical observations and cardiovascular risk assessments, including recording blood pressure, pulse, height, weight and BMI.

  • Supporting health promotion, recall and review processes where required.

  • Completing accurate clinical documentation and updating patient records.

  • Providing chaperone support and assisting clinicians and the wider practice team with routine clinical duties.

  • Supporting stock management, ordering and maintaining appropriate levels of clinical supplies.

  • Following practice policies, procedures, confidentiality and information governance requirements.

  • Providing a welcoming, professional and patient-centred service.

  • Travelling between Bilsthorpe Surgery and other sites as required to meet service needs.

About us

We are a two-partner GMS (General Medical Services) teaching practice with a steadily growing patient list of approximately 4,370 patients. We pride ourselves on delivering excellent clinical care with a strong ethos of service to our local community. This commitment is reflected in consistently high QOF achievement, a low level of complaints, and regular positive feedback from patients. We were rated GOOD in all areas at our most recent CQC inspection (08.06.22).

In addition, we also deliver the Nottinghamshire Community Dermatology Service. The service is commissioned by the local Integrated Care Board and is currently expanding further into Nottinghamshire. The dermatology service operates from within our GP surgery and provides high-quality, community-based specialist care.

We are also a recognised teaching practice, supporting medical students from the University of Nottingham, PA students from Sheffield Hallam University, and De Montfort University, Leicester. Personal development and ongoing training for the entire practice team remain a longstanding priority.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE Maths and English at Grade C / Level 4 or above, or equivalent
  • Relevant Healthcare Assistant / Clinical Healthcare qualification or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of appropriate training and competency in clinical skills relevant to the role
  • Phlebotomy training/qualification or demonstrable experience and competency in blood taking

Desirable

  • Care Certificate
  • Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care
  • Qualification or additional training in phlebotomy
  • Training or experience in NHS Health Checks
  • Basic Life Support training
  • Infection Prevention and Control training
  • Minor surgery / minor operations experience or relevant clinical training
