Lead Product Manager - In-Person Customer Payments

Own and scale Tesco’s customer present payment capabilities, shaping strategy, teams, and technology across Tesco Group.

The Customer Payment team

Our vision: To make payment a reason for customers to shop more of Tesco, more often.

Payment is the moment of truth in every shopping journey; the point where a basket becomes a sale. Our technologies allow customers to access everyday essentials, for Tesco to get paid, and for teams across Tesco to see (and trust) the result of that exchange.

Our in-house platform processes over 2.6 billion payments every year, totalling around £70 billion in 5 markets, across Cash, Scheme cards, fuel cards, gift cards and meal card tenders.
In the UK, £1-in-every-£9 of UK retail spend flows through our payment technology.

As part of our customer-first strategy, we own and operate the non-regulated components of instore payment technology. This puts Tesco in control of how we innovate across customer experience, the commercial landscape, and payment industry compliance. With our combination of scale, in-house technology, and Clubcard, Tesco is one of the few retailers able to shape the future of customer payments, not simply adapt to it. This is a unique competitive advantage for a large multinational retailer.

As Lead Product Manager for in-person customer payment you will lead four product development teams. Your teams own and operate card and cash APIs, hardware, and data products. Your products make it quick, easy and secure to pay by cash, scheme cards, gift cards, meal cards, digital subscriptions, or any future electronic payments.

Your four product development teams each have a dedicated product manager and 8-10 collocated software engineers based in either Hungary, India, or UK.

This is a leadership role within the broader Customer Payment team of 11 product development teams (17 PMs, 6 TPMs, and ~100 software engineers).

Everyone will use your products! You will transform the customer payment experience in-store over the next 3 years:

  1. Deliver a cash management strategy to balance customer needs, operational resilience and costs to serve and secure cash.
  2. Pilot new cash and card payment devices/experiences, the path to next-gen Tesco Tills.
  3. Reach new markets via Tesco Till, e.g. Fuel stations, Central European stores
  4. Develop and execute a multi-vendor strategy so that Tesco can trade when others can’t.
  5. Launch new payment linked loyalty capabilities, e.g. Clubcard in digital wallets
  6. Test and learn new ways to pay e.g. Account to Account, Buy now pay later, biometric (…)

You will lead through others, developing the capabilities of your Product Managers and aligning stakeholders across Stores frontend, Finance, and the wider payment industry.

You will set direction, align teams, and scale the impact of our platform products. You will drive a faster, more convenient checkout. You will transform instore payments across 5 markets via our in-house Tesco Till platform. You will ensure that customer payments are secure, compliant and resilient. You will ensure our products are healthy, optimised and fit to adapt and shape new ways to pay.
