About Tillylovesmaths

Tillylovesmaths supports students who are struggling with maths. The heart of our teaching philosophy is that students are so capable of doing well in maths, and if they’re not succeeding, the problem is with the way it’s being taught to them, not the student themself.

We believe in giving students a conceptual understanding of maths, the kind that lasts. It’s the basis of good teaching, and it’s essential for many neurodiverse students too. Many of the students we work with have specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and ADHD, as well as maths anxiety. We want tutors who know how to teach for a deeper understanding of mathematics.

Who we’re looking for

You have experience teaching or tutoring Maths within the UK education system, across Key Stage 3, GCSE /IGCSE. You don’t need a maths-related degree. This would suit a teacher looking for extra tutoring hours, or a teacher looking to leave the classroom.

You’re also:

  • Empathetic. Students are often anxious and have written themselves off as “bad at maths” you understand this and can build a rapport with these students quickly.
  • Intuitive. You can tell when a student is genuinely stuck, why they’ve gone quiet, and when to push them to think independently and when explicit instruction is needed.
  • Someone who teaches the “why”. You care about real understanding over memorised tricks, and you’re confident across the full GCSE syllabus.
  • Someone who asks, not tells. You guide students to work it out themselves and build their independence rather than rescuing them. You’re comfortable holding silences while students think.
  • Relaxed and self-confident. You understand that a a good teacher is incredibly valuable to a struggling student’s success, but at the same time there is a limit of what we can do for someone who is not ready to engage so you don’t take it personally if a student is not ready to work.
  • Exam-savvy. You know what examiners are looking for, and you are able to teach exam skills.
  • Organised and reliable. You show up, follow through, and keep parents clearly updated on progress.
  • Honest. You tell parents the truth, even when the news isn’t what they hoped for.

The role

  • Self-employed. You’ll work as an independent contractor, not an employee.
  • Students are found for you. We find and match students to you, and we handle the payments, so you can focus on teaching.
  • Flexible hours. You set your own schedule & are responsible for using your own resources and planning your own lesson as a contractor. Anywhere from 1 to 20 hours a week depending on demand. Hours aren’t guaranteed, and you can decline sessions that don’t suit you.
  • Pay works out as £30-£60 per hour, depending on experience.
  • Remote. You’ll teach 1:1 and/or small groups, online.
