Operations Manager - Substations

Location Central London, with operational sites across Surrey and Middlesex. Candidates must live within 45 minutes commute of Addlestone, Surrey. Hours Full Time - Flexible and dynamic working environment with hybrid working embedded in the culture, combining site and home working to support a healthy work-life balance. Salary £76,000–£90,000 per year, plus company car and 30% bonus opportunity. 28 days annual leave plus pension contributions totaling up to 18%. About the Role As an Operations Manager - Substations at National Grid, you will play a senior leadership role in shaping the electricity transmission network for local communities and future generations. You will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and resilient operation of electricity transmission substations across five operational sites in the Surrey/Middlesex area. Leading a team of 13 direct reports and approximately 22 full-time employees, you will provide visible, confident, and experienced leadership to a dispersed operational workforce, fostering high performance, continuous improvement, and a strong safety culture. This key role ensures optimal asset performance, regulatory compliance, and lifecycle management within a complex and nationally significant environment. You will lead technical teams, coordinate cross-functional projects, oversee preventative maintenance and fault response, and support major capital works to deliver a reliable 24/7 electricity transmission network. Your ability to unite diverse teams, manage various personalities, and communicate clearly across teams, stakeholders, and sites will be essential. We seek a leader who brings new energy and a fresh voice to operations—someone visible on site, able to build trust quickly, and committed to performance through coaching, accountability, and continuous improvement.
